What an AI-Powered Creative Director Actually Does
AI can generate a thousand images in an hour. Knowing which one is right for your brand is still a human job. Here is how I work.
Generative tools have made images cheap. Anyone can type a prompt and get something polished in seconds. So what is left for a creative director to do?
Almost everything that matters.
Strategy comes before the prompt
A good visual starts with a question, not a prompt: who is this for, and what should they feel? Before I generate a single frame, I work out the brand’s positioning, its audience and the message it needs to carry. That becomes the brief, and the brief is what keeps a hundred generations pointing in one direction.
Taste is the filter
AI is very good at producing options and very bad at choosing between them. My job is to curate: to see which image fits the brand’s character, which one only looks impressive, and which one will still feel right after the tenth time someone sees it.
Directing, not just generating
The first result is rarely the final one. I refine composition, light, mood and detail across many iterations, combine AI output with traditional editing, and make sure every visual in a campaign looks like it belongs to the same world.
Where it pays off
- Brand identity: a consistent image style that makes a brand recognisable.
- Ads: fast concepts and many variations for testing on social platforms.
- Content: visuals and short motion pieces for Instagram and TikTok.
The short version
AI speeds up making. A creative director makes sure you are making the right thing.
